Blush Deceit (Vanitas)
Edith Pons, 2025
Oil on canvas
79.5 × 70 cm
Unique piece
Blush Deceit (Vanitas) belongs to Edith Pons’ VANITAS series: a body of work dedicated to reflecting on the fragility of existence and the hostile forces the soul confronts throughout life.
Bathed in luminous blush tones — the color of seduction and superficial beauty — the composition unfolds through classical vanitas symbols: exuberant flowers announcing the passage of time, a crystal sphere evoking the vulnerability of earthly securities, and a mask embodying deception and the presence of evil.
Grapes suggest abundance and immediate pleasure, while the silk drapery recalls material attachment and the allure of the visible. Everything appears delicate, gracious, and radiant, yet beneath this sweetness lies a silent tension: time advances, and whatever captivates the soul apart from God inevitably fades and dies — and with it, the soul ensnared in what cannot endure.
This work seeks to reveal. Its pictorial richness and enveloping beauty become a veil through which an uncomfortable truth emerges: even the most radiant — yet false — beauty can separate us from the eternal.
Blush Deceit (Vanitas) invites slow contemplation: a meditation on deceptive beauty, impermanence, and the spiritual battle between evil unseen and what is true.
Vanitas Vanitatum… All under the sun is vanity.
